Day Seventeen: Dust in the Wind

Getting the DDA Car Towed

On Sunday, Dom prophesized: "It's Week 3. Everything's going to break this week." He was right. Yesterday, the Tablet PC died. Today, on the way to Zion National Park, the Double-D America car gave up on life.

First, we heard noise from under the hood. Then, the power steering shut off. Finally, the engine decided not to be outdone, so it overheated. We let the car cool down, but after continuing our trip, the warning lights on the dash started flashing like a disco dancefloor.

Now, I'm sitting in the waiting area of a Nissan dealership in St. George, Utah hoping the third member of Team DD didn't pass into the heaven for legendary roadtrip automobiles.

I fear the trip may have ended before we even reached the west coast.

Sounds like you lost a serpentine belt. Hopefully it didn't doo too much damage to your engine. Did you lose the A/C too?

We had the car checked out, and the dealer told us the idler pulley needed to be replaced. Thankfully, the dealer had the part in stock, so we were quickly on our way.

Yeah, idler pulley assembly bearings went, taking out the compressor belt, alternator belt, and the fan belt, which I suppose explains each unique problem we had. The best part is that the service tech in Boulder's Nissan told us that the idler pulley should be fine for the rest of the trip, even though it was making some squealing noises. I'll have a behind-the-scenes featurette on the death and rebirth of the Team DD car as soon as the site is equipped for them.
