Days Eleven and Twelve: Missouri Loves Company

Wowo. We've been driving for hours and hours from Missouri to Arkansas to Oklahoma to Nebraska. We would post to the site more often, but the wireless internet coverage is spotty at best.

Here's the rundown of what we've been doing:

We visited the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Dom figured it'd be the thing to do since St. Louis is the gateway into The West, and it would be a great place to start the next part of our trip.

I've always wanted to see the Arch, and the exterior certainly wasn't a disappointment. The simple, clean curve is eye-catching and sleek.

The interior is a different story:

The elevator ride to the top of the arch is cramped. The elevators (above) are tiny egg-shaped capsules about 5 cubic feet in size. There are four seats along the inside shell of the egg, and if you didn't know the other people riding with you, you'd certainly get to know their smells very well in that enclosed space.

There's a Museum of Westward Expansion in the facility below the Arch, and it's just like any Western-themed attraction... only ridden with heavy guilt for damages done to Native Americans. Every item in the museum was labeled with some kind of apology to the tribes displaced by the US Government.

After the arch, we headed through (more) unpaved roads in Arkansas to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Lately, we've been staying in Super 8 Motels which -- I consider -- to be far superior to Motel Sucks 6. Two out of Three Motel 6 rooms smell of sweat and failure. All three Super 8 Motel rooms we've stayed in have been well kept and unoffensive to the nostrils. So, down with 6. Up with 8.

Dom's been very quiet in the mornings, and I think it's because he's homesick. It normally takes me two weeks of road travel before I get homesick. This means I only have two days left before it hits! I got a twinge of the pain this morning when I put articles back into my toiletry bag. That's usually what gets me first -- I miss having a real bathroom with my things all laid out. A real bathroom in which I'm not afraid to wear glasses for fear I might see horrendous, vomit-inducing mystery stains on the toilet, floor, shower curtain, ceiling, etc.

But, for now, I think I'm still in a (somewhat) stable frame of mind... I think.

Keep on truckin'.

What happens when the eggs get dropped?

My experience was the same when I went to the top of the Arch. When I got up there I asked if it was possible to see the Joe Louis Arena from there. A passerby remarked that building was in Detroit. But it was a clear day! *sigh* Safe travels.

Yeah, it's quiet boring here without you. It begs the question, "What next?"
